Student Medical Insurance for Overseas LearnersGoing back in time to 1990/91 I did a backpacking tour of the world, well half of it, and there were many Western students in many of these faraway places either getting some kind of work experience overseas or studying as part of a program. I was astonished to discover that so many international learners overseas either had no health insurance cover or inadequate cover. Their reasoning was that they were young and invincible. Probably the most dangerous policy going! Proof of a university student health insurance, or some kind of special overseas policy for youngsters studying outside of their own country, should be a requirement before such posts are offered to study posts abroad, and they usually are, but there are also those so called students (taking time out (gaps)), who travel around independently and just think that the money spend on some kind of worldwide medical insurance is not money well spent. That is until they need it!!! |

It's probably not fair to knock the laxidasical attitude of youth because we've all been there and had such laid back attitudes when we were younger. In any case, the young have nothing to compare things with as they've yet to become old. Oder people can compare their situation with youthfulness because they've experienced both being in different generations. Even so, that doesn’t mean we adults should not attempt to get the young learners to see why college student health insurance is so important, especially when low cost student health insurance is so available to most. More risks and experimenting is done in those studious years than at any other time in one's lifetime, so in some ways, for some students, insurance cover during this time is perhaps as important as any other time.
Usually, it's great fun just being young, and quite often students are branded as being Cheap Charlie's. This isn't really fair because to start with, many young learners simply don't have a lot of disposable cash, and what bit they do have they want to spend on drinking, partying, grooming, dating, and shopping for clothes. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that because they are young and that's how it's supposed to be. However, none of us are indispensable, even though we like to think we are, so a heavily discounted college student health insurance should be compulsory, especially when the lifestyle of the youngsters is somewhat more risky than that of older mature folks. TRAVELLING ABROAD, TAKING A GAP YEAR? Read on... Covering that Travel Gap: Medical (health) Insurance for Students travelling abroad during a gap year is crucial. Every single year without expectation, young fit healthy students do the backpacking thing before starting university. They think that because they are youthful, able-bodied and in the pink health wise, that they are indispensable. Sadly, every year a plethora of students get sick whilst travelling, and those without insurance may never get to see the inside of a university due to accident or sudden health complications whilst overseas. It's a sad fact that some countries will allow patients to die if they cannot guarantee costs in advance. Still think it's worth travelling without cover? A Word of Warning for Students with Pre-existing Health Conditions If a student has a pre-existing medical condition, this needs to be taken that into consideration when getting new insurance, i.e. finding medical insurance that includes treatment for their condition. In such cases a more elaborate plan will need to be sought. It's NEVER a good idea to try and hide pre-existing health issues in order to get a cheaper policy because that insurance might not give cover at all in the vent that the insuree gets found out at the time of a claim. |
