Supplemental Maternity Insurance

healthIs supplemental maternity insurance a sensible choice or just another unnecessary policy to pay out for? Well, it depends on a number of things. Firstly, you may find that your existing health plan already covers you. It's surprising how many folks don't know what they're insured for 'specifically' in their existing policies. If you are adequately covered by your current health insurance, then obviously supplemental maternity insurance is not necessary. If you're not covered, and it concerns you, then perhaps you might want to look into purchasing some form of supplemental maternity insurance before you conceive.

What insurance does for us, apart from the obvious, is it gives us peace of mind, and that's priceless. If you are thinking about getting pregnant at some point in the near future, them taking out supplemental maternity insurance could mean the difference between a stress-free pregnancy and one that has you worrying about things morning, noon, and night. Remember, you must take out supplemental maternity insurance before, not after ,your conceive.

Maternity Leave Insurance Anyone?

An insurance company makes most of its money from selling policies that no one claims on. This is why many of them fight tooth and nail to stop or reduce a claim when it does happen. So if a young healthy woman goes into an insurance office and asks to take out some kind of maternity leave insurance, she would probably be laughed out of the office. There would be a very possible chance of her taking maternity leave as some point, which was probably her reasons for enquiring in the first place, and this is not what insurance companies are there to cover.

It wasn't all that long ago when a human being gave birth to so many babies that it could only be described as a litter! The name for 8 babies being born in one go by one mother is Octuplets. This super fertile lady was already the single Mom of six other kids. No one, not even the doctors anticipated so many babies during this unusual birth, and although mother and baby did just fine, it shows that no pregnancy is standard. In this age of fertility drugs and artificial inseminations etc, all kinds of unforeseen things can happen during labour, hence why some women decide that maternity health insurance, or pregnancy health insurance is an extra policy they like to cover themselves for.

There are numerous reasons why expectant parents might want to take out a supplemental maternity insurance in addition to their regular health protection. Sometimes, there are hereditary complications that may cause issues or concerns during the pregnancy or at the time of birth. There are just some people who are natural worriers and take out extra cover for that little extra piece of mind, which in itself is good for both mum and baby to be. Although maternity health insurance might not be cheap, especially if there is a history of complications, we are at the end of the day, talking about a new life here, and when many households spend more money on insuring possession than they do people, it kind of puts things into perspective.

Most women in western societies often view their pregnancy as one of the most exciting and momentous periods of their life. In fact, many young women actually become radiant during the 9 months of carrying child. However, not all women have such luck, and those who have a family history of problematic births, or others who become pregnant later on in life much to their surprise, get a lot of comfort and stress relief when they take out a comprehensive maternity health insurance for the duration. As we've pointed out earlier in this piece, pregnancy health insurance is often covered in a more general policy, but it will only cover so much under certain conditions, which is why some women are happier taking out a separate specialised policy.

Hopefully it is not clean that a pregnancy health insurance policy does not cover women (or their partners) as some kind of maternity leave insurance. Generally speaking, it is expected that young women go on to have babies, so why would an insurance company give anyone cover with those odds? They operate on the hope that you will NOT need to claim, which would be highly unlikely with a young healthy heterosexual women. Supplemental maternity insurance is there to give additional cover to the expectant mum in the event of any complications, and this is an acceptable type of policy for most companies, especially for those women who have no history, or family history of problematic births.

To Summarise: If you're young fit and healthy, then spending extra cash on some kind of additional maternity health insurance is probably not on your mind, and nor should it be. If there is a family history of problematic births then an additional pregnancy health insurance policy will probably be something that you will take out. Or, if you're just a worrier and need that piece of mind, then you too might want to look at supplemental maternity insurance of some sort. Remember, the more anxiety free mum-to-be is, the better it is for all, and that includes the unborn child. Finally, if you think that a comprehensive maternity health insurance is going to be a must have, keep your costs low and invest in such a policy well before you even conceive.
